Photo of the week. Staircase

The holiday is over so let's start some work. Today I have here a simple trick how to fix the "black holes" in the interior photography. Please notice the glass door on the staircase. The light behind it looks just natural.

Typical problems with the interior photography is the high dynamic range of the scene. The shadows are too dark and highlight areas are too bright for the camera to capture it in one shot. One of the solutions is to set the exposure to capture the highlights and then fill up the dark areas with the flash. Using only one flash in cases like this  is just not enough.

This is one of the test shots to check the exposure.
I did not care about verticals and composition.

The space behind the doors and in the corridors is dark and feels cold. I have used one flash with the CTO gel and the result is here:

It is true that with the HDR technique, I could lighten the space behind the door, but I would not be able to change the colour of the light to the warmer orange tone.
The first flash is on the left over the camera lighting the blue picture on the wall. The second flash is on the right side on the floor lighting the flower and the dark corner under the stairs. And the third one is the one already discussed behind the door with the CTO gel.

HDR can work, you just need to take two series of images. One white balanced for natural light and the other for light bulbs. Combine the two in Photoshop or a product like Oloneo Relight allows you to fade in/out the colours and intensity of internal light as required.

  2. Kiff,
Thanks for a good tip. I use most of the time multiple flashes so for me it is natural to solve issues like this with another flash and CTO gel. Although I do use HDR time to time. It is good to know tricks like this in case I won't be able to use flash for what whatever reason.
