Falling Walls

Probably the most common mistake in interior and architecture photography are "falling" walls.  A  bit of attention and some minimal investment can help to avoid this problem.
There are basically 2 reasons why the walls are falling.  The rotation of the camera round the lens axis to the right or left, or pointing the camera upwards or downwards. Many photographers and real estate agents try the later to increase the area covered by the photograph. Unfortunately it does not help at all.
The professional photographers use a few very simple tools to keep verticals straight. The first one is the tripod. For me the tripod is absolutely essential for following reasons:
Firstly: It allows me to shoot in very dark situations with low ISO, when the shutter speed falls down to 1 second or longer.
Secondly: I have an option to combine multiple shots into one HDR image.
Thirdly: It is much easier to set perfect level position of the camera.
Fourthly: Especially for The Real Estate Agents. Photographic with the tripod takes a bit more time, but it looks much more professional and client will feel that she/he gets something valuable for their money. And I do not know a car into which you could not fit an tripod. So nothing can stop you to have one permanently in your car.
Another tool is the spirit level. Every DSLR has a hot shoe for a flash. Instead of flash you can plug in a special spirit level. Some "experts" in shops might be telling you that it is very precise and special piece of equipment worth dozens of Euros. Do not trust them. The prices on ebay go between 3 to 10 USD.  Also some cameras have electronical spirit level built in. Pentax K5 or Canon 60D.
The last thing, which can help are guides on the display of the camera. There is probably no digital camera without vertical and horizontal guides. Just check the documentation to find out how to switch them on.

The  next time I will write about how to fix the falling walls in the computer.

If you have any questions about photography of real estate do not hesitate to ask me on Google+, facebook or twitter.  I will be happy to help.
